What is a Leprechaun?

A leprechaun is usually described as a bearded man who wears a green suit and hat. It’s believed there are no female leprechauns to be found. According to stories, the leprechaun is a shoemaker who spends most of his time making and fixing shoes. In fact, some say when a leprechaun is near, you can hear the tap-tap-tapping of his tiny hammer as he drives nails into shoes. These little men are also said to be very mischievous and enjoy playing tricks on those they meet.

Are Leprechauns Real?

Old Irish tales say this little mischief-maker is real and was first spotted back in the 700s. Stories about leprechauns have been passed on for generations. As for its name, some suggest that the word “leprechaun” comes from the old Irish word luchorpán, which means small body. Others say it developed from an Irish word that means shoemaker.

What About That Pot of Gold?

It’s said that every leprechaun has a pot of gold that he hides deep in the Irish countryside. According to legend, the leprechaun must give this treasure away to anyone who captures him. But this little fellow won’t let his treasure slip away easily. The story goes that the sneaky leprechaun can fool a person into looking away for an instant. And just like that, he vanishes into his forest home and takes his treasure with him.

Do They Always Wear Green?

Before the 1800s, leprechauns were described as wearing red suits instead of green ones. But that changed in the late 1700s when an Irish poet named William Allingham wrote about a leprechaun dressed in green.

Where Can I See Leprechauns?

We can’t promise anything, but there are a few places around the world dedicated to the leprechaun:

Leprechaun Park: Mill Ends Park in Oregon is the world’s smallest park. Truth be told, the park is just a flower pot full of plants in the middle of a road. But, besides that, the park is said to be home to a leprechaun colony. The story of leprechauns living here dates back to 1947. That’s when a local reporter began to write stories about the park’s head leprechaun named Patrick O’Toole. The park has been declared the only leprechaun colony west of Ireland. And to this day, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations are held here.

Leprechaun Cavern: In the town of Carlingford, Ireland, there are underground caverns that visitors can walk through. A tour guide explains the history of leprechauns and tells tales about the leprechauns that are said to travel in these underground tunnels.

Leprechaun Museum: Found in Dublin, Ireland, this museum provides information about leprechauns beginning from the first ever sighting back in the eighth century to modern day.

Hello everyone! Hope you had a great weekend, that everything is great in your homes and that you enjoy the task of the past week where you discovered some information about Jamaica. 

Hoy comenzamos con un nuevo proyecto, que a su vez será el último del curso. Es por esto que este proyecto tendrá una duración más corta de lo habitual. Hoy tuvimos la primera videollamada y tendremos la siguiente para quien se pueda conectar el próximo martes 9 de junio.

Para este último proyecto nos moveremos a Irlanda y trataremos de descubrir un poco más de lo que ya sabemos sobre su cultura, que en algunos aspectos es muy parecida a la asturiana.

Comenzaremos trabajando el listening con ayuda de los siguientes vídeos:

Esta es una canción con un estilo típico de Irlanda, puede ser un poco difícil de comprender por su acento irlandés pero está bien que la escuchemos para conocer un poco de su cultura.

En este vídeo unos niños de Irlanda nos explican la tradición de St Patrick's day, nuevamente debido a su acento quizás sea un poco complicado por lo que me vale con que tratéis de entenderlo. Debajo os pongo un vídeo donde lo explica con un acento al que estamos más acostumbrados. No pondremos preguntas para estos listenings.

Continuaremos con el writing donde tendremos dos partes, las cuales os recomiendo que las hagáis siguiendo el orden que os propongo.

Primero realizaremos un Picture Diccionary en el que debemos incluir 10 palabras que tengan algún tipo de relación con Irlanda (procurar no poner nombre propios como puede ser en este caso Dublín), este vocabulary puede ser sacado de los vídeos o bien de vuestra propia investigación sobre el país. Recordar que el Picture Dictionary tiene el dibujo de la palabra y la palabra en INGLÉS no en castellano. 

Después de esta primera parte del writing tendremos el reading que consistirá en la lectura de un texto sobre los leprechaun y responder una serie de preguntas sobre el mismo. Este texto puede serviros de ayuda para realizar la segunda parte del writing.

Esta segunda parte del writing consiste en crear vuestro propio leprechaun, primero podéis dibujarlo y después lo describís, tanto su ropa como sus gustos, es vuestro propio leprechaun por lo que puede ser como vosotros queráis.

Por último tenemos el speaking, como ya sabéis para el speaking recordad que tenemos la clase por videollamada de la semana que viene o si no pudierais conectaros y queréis mandármelo mediante el e-mail es perfecto. Este speaking consistirá en la lectura de la descripción del leprechaun mostrando el leprechaun para que se pueda ver la relación del dibujo y la descripción.

 Buenos días. Esta semana comenzaremos a resolver problemas. En el blog, a la derecha, tenéis una bombilla que pone encima operaciones y problemas. Después de ver los vídeos hacéis las páginas 25,26,27,28 y 29. Una cada día. Os cargo también un juego de cálculo mental, para que podáis practicar. Un abrazo y buena semana

PROBABILIDAD: 

Miramos en los apuntes del tema 12, la página 28, solo el principio; sólo hasta donde pone datos estadísticos, porque eso lo haremos la próxima semana.

Hacéis esta semana las páginas 52,53 y 59 de las fichas de refuerzo y ampliación de matemáticas.

JAMAICA

Jamaica is a mountainous island in the Caribbean Sea. It is part of the chain of Caribbean islands called the Greater Antilles, along with Cuba, Hispaniola, and Puerto Rico.

Most of the population lives in the city and one third (1/3) of all Jamaicans live in the capital of Kingston. More than 90% of the population is of African descent, but many other people have come from China, India, Germany, and Syria to find work on the island.

When most people think of Jamaica they think of Reggae, or "Ragged Music." The music was born in the 1950s and '60s from the musical styles of mento, ska, and rocksteady. The most famous reggae star was Bob Marley, who was backed by his group the Wailers.

Jamaicans are spiritual people and follow many religions, including Christianity. Many are Rastafarians, that is a proper style of Christianity.

Rastafarians believe that Haile Selassie, Emperor of Ethiopia from 1916 to 1974, was their savior. Rasta men wear their hair in dreadlocks, believing that hair should not be cut, and wear clothing in red, gold, and green that are the colors of the Ethiopian flag.

The island is home to the endangered Homerus swallowtail, the largest butterfly in the Western Hemisphere. Its wingspan 25 cm, which makes this insect larger than many of the island's birds.

Bird watchers enjoy the 250 bird species that can be seen on the island, including 26 birds that are found nowhere else. The vervain, the world's second smallest bird is found here. This tiny bird is only 8 cm long. Jamaica's national bird is the streamertail bird, or "doctor bird." It has long tail feathers and a scarlet bill.

Hello everyone! Hope you had a great weekend, that everything is great in your homes and that you enjoy the task of the past week where you discovered some information about South Africa. 

Hoy comenzamos con un nuevo proyecto el cual durará las dos próximas semanas. Como ya sabéis continuaremos con la misma dinámica de trabajo que en la anterior tarea, conoceremos un nuevo país en el que se habla inglés como lengua oficial y que quizás no conocíamos anteriormente o que no relacionábamos con el inglés.

Es por esto que esta semana y la semana que viene vamos a visitar Jamaica y comenzaremos trabajando el listening con ayuda de los siguientes vídeos:

Este primer vídeo es una canción de Bob Marley, uno de los artistas más famosos de Jamaica, esta canción tiene una letra sencilla por lo que os la recomiendo para escuchar antes de ponernos con las tareas.

Este otro corto nos cuenta la vida de uno de los deportistas más famosos no sólo de Jamaica sino también del mundo. Este vídeo es simplemente para que los veáis y tratéis de entender lo máximo posible.

Este vídeo nos da un poco de información sobre Jamaica gracias a la ayuda de estos estudiantes, para comprobar si entendemos bien la información vamos a hacer un pequeño listening más práctico. Es por esto que para este vídeo os pondré unas preguntas de TRUE or FALSE, como ya sabéis si son verdaderas no hace falta poner nada, pero si son falsas debemos corregirlas (en este caso tan sólo será corregir una o dos palabras en el caso de que sean FALSE).

TRUE OR FALSE:

1. Jamaica is the largest country in the Caribbean that speaks English.
2. On august 6th 1962 Jamaica became independent.
3. The Jamaican flag is unique because it has the colours of the American flag.
4. Jamaica is the third producer of banana in the western hemisphere.

7. They have snow and that is why they participate in the Winter Olympic Games.

Continuaremos con el writing donde tendremos dos partes, las cuales os recomiendo que las hagáis siguiendo el orden que os propongo.

Primero realizaremos un Picture Diccionary en el que debemos incluir 10 palabras que tengan algún tipo de relación con Jamaica (procurar no poner nombre propios como puede ser en este caso Usain Bolt), este vocabulary puede ser sacado de los vídeos o bien de vuestra propia investigación sobre el país. Recordar que el Picture Dictionary tiene el dibujo de la palabra y la palabra en INGLÉS. 

Otra tarea de writing será escribir un pequeño texto (al menos 5 líneas) sobre jamaica donde debéis utilizar al menos 3 palabras del vocabulario. Os recomiendo hacer esta tarea después del reading.

El reading consistirá en la lectura de un texto sobre Jamaica y responder una serie de preguntas sobre el mismo. Este texto puede serviros de ayuda para realizar el writing.

Por último tenemos el speaking, como ya sabéis para el speaking recordad que tenemos la clase por videollamada de la semana que viene o si no pudierais conectaros y queréis mandármelo mediante el e-mail es perfecto. Os recuerdo también que el speaking consiste en la lectura de vuestro propio writing.

SEXTA SEMANA. CUERPOS GEOMÉTRICOS

En los apuntes que os he cargado en la entrada anterior de matemáticas, en el tema 11: página 25,26 y 27; tenéis la explicación de lo que son cuerpos geométricos y sus partes. Lo miráis despacito junto con los vídeos que os acabo de cargar y me decís si tenéis alguna duda.
Una vez que hayáis terminado de mirar hacéis las fichas del cuaderno de  matemáticas(las de siempre), páginas: 49,50 y 51. Ya sabéis si hay alguna duda me la comentáis. Un abrazo muy fuerte y que tengáis buena semana.
